Josefina Montoya, the American girl doll represents a nine year old American Girl who lived on a ranch in Santa Fe New Mexico in 1824 with her Dad, and three sisters. Her mom died when she was eight.

Josefina loved her ranch; it had been her papa’s family ranch for more than one hundred years.  Life on the ranch was not easy. Everyone had to work hard.  Some years there was enough rain and sun so the crops grew and the animals were strong and healthy.  Some years there was not enough rain and the land was dry, the plants did not grow well and the animals were thirsty.   But whatever the conditions or the times, Josefina loved the ranch.

As Josefina worked and played on the ranch, there were constant reminders of her mom. Her mother grew beautiful flowers and they reminded Josefina of her mother and their love.

Her beloved grandfather, her abuelito, was a trader and went to Mexico City to trade for things from all over the world. He was gone six months each time and his homecoming after each trip was very exciting.  Grandfather, came home with new things and plenty of exciting stories about robbers or wild animal attacks.
One day Abuelito returned from a trading trip with a big surprise….
